What would happen if an abortion doctor agreed to be interviewed while on sodium pentothal (truth serum)?
Interviewer: Dr. Hartman, thank you for agreeing to this interview under sodium pentothal. Let’s start with your childhood. What shaped you?
Dr. Hartman: My childhood? It was a mess. My father vanished before I could remember him, and my mother was always exhausted, working herself into the ground for scraps. I didn’t turn into a monster, but I learned early that life isn’t fair and nobody’s coming to save you. I thought medicine would let me help people, maybe even fix something in myself. That was naïve.

Interviewer: So you went to medical school with good intentions?
Dr. Hartman: I did. I wanted to be the doctor who made a difference. But reality hit hard—debt, bureaucracy, and the realization that the system chews up idealists. I saw colleagues chasing money, and I followed. I told myself I was still helping, but the truth is, the money was too good to ignore.
Interviewer: When did you decide to start performing abortions?
Dr. Hartman: During residency. I saw the demand, the desperation, and the cash. I started out thinking I was doing something necessary, but after a while, it was just a job. The money made it easier to ignore the rest.
Interviewer: Did something in you change to allow you to keep doing abortions?
Dr. Hartman: Yeah, something changed. At first, I felt sick about it. But you get used to anything if you do it enough. You stop thinking about the details. You numb yourself, because if you don’t, you can’t keep going. I wouldn’t say something died, but something definitely broke.
Interviewer: How many babies do you believe you’ve killed over the years?
Dr. Hartman: (Pauses) I’ve kept count, in a way. It’s over 7,000. I used to tell myself they were just procedures, but I know what they were. I don’t pretend otherwise anymore.
Interviewer: Do you have children?
Dr. Hartman: Five, that I know of. Two with my first wife, one with a woman I barely remember, and two more from affairs. I’m not a father to any of them. I send money, but that’s it. I don’t have a relationship with any of them, and I doubt I ever will.
Interviewer: Are you married now? What’s your marital history?
Dr. Hartman: Three marriages, all disasters. First wife left when she realized I cared more about work than her. Second tried to fix me, but I was already too far gone. Third just wanted the lifestyle, and when the money stopped impressing her, she left too. I’m alone now, and I don’t blame them.
Interviewer: What about your beliefs? Do you have any spiritual or philosophical views that influence your work?
Dr. Hartman: I don’t believe in anything anymore. Not God, not Satan, not fate. Life is random, brutal, and short. You do what you have to do to get by. I used to think I was helping, but now I just try to get through the day. There’s no bigger meaning.
Interviewer: Do you think a doctor with logical consistency could perform abortions?
Dr. Hartman: No. Not if they’re honest with themselves. If you really look at what you’re doing, you can’t justify it logically or morally. You have to lie to yourself, or just stop caring. Most of us just stop caring.
Interviewer: Any regrets?
Dr. Hartman: Plenty. Mostly about my kids, and the people I’ve pushed away. The money’s good, but it doesn’t fill the emptiness. I wish I’d made different choices, but it’s too late now.
Interviewer: What keeps you going?
Dr. Hartman: Habit, bitterness, and the fact that I don’t know what else to do. The money’s all I have left, and even that doesn’t mean much anymore.
